EDT6203 : WEEK 4 (THE EVENT OF INSTRUCTION)
This is the handout that elaborates Gagne 9 Events of Instructions.
1. Gaining Attention
= there are many ways to attract students attention.
= we should tackle their interests
= we should dig up their curiosity
These should stimulate and maintain their motivation.
2. Inform the Learners of the Objectives
= this is when we emphasize what is/are expected to be performed by them in terms of knowledge/skills
= the objectives also will help them to focus on specific skills which will keep them on track and stay on target.
3. Stimulating Recall of Prerequisite Learned Capabilities
= learners must have prior knowledge in order new learning to be successful.
4. Presenting the Stimulus Material
= Designer should display or show related and appropriate stimulus before hand.
= We can facilitate essential features by bold, underline, highlight, italic, resize etc.
= In the learning of concepts and rules, there are 2 approaches either Inductive vs. Deductive.
e.g. we can teach rules first followed by examples or vice versa.
5. Providing Learning Guidance
6. Eliciting Performance
7.Providing Feedback
8. Assessing performance
9. Enhancing Retention and Transfer

EDT 6203 : WEEK 4 (DEFINING PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES)
Today the class started with the discussion of learners differences towards learning. I mentioned to Dr.Rose that no matter how much extrinsic motivation or support we give to the learners, in the end it is all up to them and the awareness comes from within them that would drive them further (intrinsic).
A motivational design called ARCS will help designer to attend the learner motivation problem.
A- ATTENTION
R - RELEVANCE
C - CONFIDENCE
S - SATISFACTION
Therefore I believe before we start with anything, we must hook learners' attention, set appropriate goals and outcomes to make them realize the relevance of doing such task. They also should be given a lot of practices/tests to show their learned ability and if they succeed meeting all the objectives, they should be given appropriate reinforcement/reward.
Next, we were given a few minutes to complete the Multiple Intelligences Test based on Howard Gardner MI Model using Microsoft Excel. I scored 34 in Intrapersonal Skills which totally reflects my personality who loves to ponder a lot (self-reflection). Although there could be not much change I have done to improve myself, but I do take seriously my attitude and perceptions which will affect myself and others.
The next thing we were doing in the class was writing objectives using Infograph. Asma and I chose Piktochart.com because we can save the time for quick registration and access using our FB account. Asma was not really understand with the handout contents, so I jotted down important points for her and she dealt with the typing in the Infograph. Dr.Rose mentioned that neither of us actually started with a draft of what we plan to put in the Infograph. Basically, I have done short notes next to each topic assigned. Therefore, I know how the infograph will or should look like. It was a problem when we took some of her time just to edit the FREE template to suit our notes.
Setting the objectives is CRUCIAL. These objectives will communicate the aim of our instruction and will provide input for the development of activities and assessment of learning.
There are 5 components objectives:
1. Situation (features of situation must be informed)
2.Learned Capability Verb (type of LO / desired demonstrated behaviour)
3.Object (the new contents they are going to learn)
4. Action Verb (how the actions should be done/carried out)
5. Tools, Constraints and Condition (the requirement of software/tools to accomplish the task and the condition for the task e.g. specific time allocation to do the task)
There are another 2 more objectives formulas regarding setting the objectives:
ABCD
A - AUDIENCE
B - BEHAVIOUR
C - CONDITION
D - DEGREE
SMART
S- SPECIFIC
M - MEASURABLE
A - ACHIEVABLE
R - REALISITIC
T - TIME-BOUND
Before we ended the class, Dr.Rose asked us to re-arrange Gagne 9 Instructional Events accordingly. I have no idea what she was referring to, by the way. So I jumbled them up and they went upside down. From the 9 events, I have 5 events wrongly arranged. Hehe. We were given a new handout to bring back home for our reflection.

EDT 6203 : WEEK 3 (THE LEARNER HANDOUT)
We were given a handout to ponder over the weekend. Surprisingly understanding a learner is not that simple. Now I can see in a different light before I place my judge or put blame on a student differences towards learning.
There are so many characteristics that make up a "Learner" and his/her learning process.
1) The Nature of Learner Qualities
= this has to be innate/genetically and comes from their inner self.
= ID cannot have the aim of altering these qualities.
= resistant to change.
e.g. visual acuity, working memory capacity, speed of retrieving previously learned concept & efficiency of this process.
2) Qualities That Are Learned
= have critical effects upon learning.
i) Intellectual Skills
ii) Cognitive Strategies
iii) Verbal Information
iv) Attitudes
v) Motor Skills
